Introduction

Russian is one of the world’s major languages, widely spoken across Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and increasingly important in international trade, diplomacy, and tourism. As Zanzibar’s tourism sector grows and attracts visitors from Russia and other Russian-speaking countries, the ability to communicate in Russian becomes a valuable skill.

This course is designed to help learners develop practical Russian language skills for use in tourism, hospitality, customer service, business, and cultural exchange. Students will gain confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing Russian, with lessons tailored to real-life situations common in Zanzibar’s multicultural and international environment.


Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Communicate confidently in Russian in both informal and professional contexts

  • Welcome and assist Russian-speaking tourists with common requests and information

  • Understand and respond to basic written Russian, such as signs, menus, and emails

  • Participate in conversations and handle inquiries in tourism and service settings

  • Write simple, clear messages, emails, and reports in Russian

  • Use essential Russian phrases and expressions relevant to hospitality and business

  • Understand cultural norms and etiquette in Russian-speaking environments

  • Prepare for international Russian language proficiency tests (optional)

  • Introduction to the Russian Language and Culture

  • Russian Alphabet (Cyrillic) and Pronunciation

  • Basic Grammar: Sentence Structure, Cases, Verbs, and Tenses

  • Vocabulary for Tourism, Hotels, and Customer Service

  • Listening and Speaking Practice: Greetings, Directions, and Requests

  • Reading Signs, Menus, Travel Documents, and Customer Messages

  • Writing Emails, Booking Confirmations, and Short Reports

  • Role-Plays for Hotel, Restaurant, and Tour Guide Scenarios

  • Russian for International Business and Cross-Cultural Communication


Final Assessment

Students will complete written and oral assessments, including a practical role-play or presentation simulating typical interactions with Russian-speaking clients.
